How to Style Your Home for a Winter Sale – Tips from Simone Haag

If you are selling your home this winter, there are simple tips to boost buyer appeal. We asked a top Australian interior designer to share her secrets.

Spring and early autumn are peak season for Melbourne real estate, but winter should not be overlooked. It has the advantage of less competition and more serious buyers in the market. That said, a cold weather sale has challenges - How to make your home warm and inviting to entice buyers?

We turned to celebrated interior designer Simone Haag, who curates spaces in the most beautiful homes, for answers. And while Simone does not style homes for sale, she is brimming with ideas on the subject.

Lamps Everywhere

Lamps that are top of Simone’s hit list:

“They are the easiest, and cheapest way to make a big impact. Buy beautiful new lamps and put them everywhere to banish the gloom. Consider unexpected places, like cordless lamps on a kitchen bench or bathroom vanity. I call lamps ‘functional art’ because they can also be sculptural pieces.”

Rug Up

Another trick to add warmth and winter appeal is to dose up on rugs:

“It’s time to invest in that rug you have always wanted. I especially love Kashmiri wool rugs in a mono colour. Like lamps, use rugs unexpectedly. Layer them over carpet, put a runner in the kitchen and overlap rugs in unusual junctions. This gives rooms a customised bespoke feel.”

Dark Walls

Instead of fighting winter’s gloom by brightening a room with white walls, Simone says lean into the darkness:

“Make a bold statement by re-painting a room in deep rich tones like olive green, dark tan, and moody blue. For a less dramatic touch try putty colours. This will really wow buyers.”

Plush and Lush

Rich layered textures make a home warm and enticing:

“Consider draped curtains in linen or velvet; sumptuous chairs in boucle or faux fur; and move away from cotton bed linen. Embrace quilt overlays and bed blankets that fall to the floor.”

Branch Out

Don’t try to replicate that spring feeling by filling your house with bright flowers:

“Instead of hunting around for pricey blooms, celebrate the stark natural beauty of winter. Fill large vases with bare branches and winter leaves. By showcasing the glories of a Melbourne winter, you will also be showcasing your home to its full potential.”
