Sorrento: ‘Kona Kahlua’ retreat where Elvis would feel at home

A restored 1970s’ Hawaiian-inspired house on the Mornington Peninsula is seeking a sale to the tune of $8m-$8.8m.

The mid-century-style Sorrento pad named Kona Kahlua has been described as a place where iconic singer and actor Elvis Presley, a noted fan of Hawaii, would feel at home.

RT Edgar’s Warwick Anderson has the beachfront listing at 4 Leggett Way in conjunction with Allard Shelton’s Joseph Walton.

Mr Anderson said the property’s original owner named it after their favourite holiday destination in Hawaii.

The house’s current owners fell in love with the groovy abode and restored it after buying about a decade ago.

They have since rented the home out as short-stay accommodation and have also obtained a planning permit to build a new modern house, designed by Inarc Architects, on the 1233sq m site.

Mr Warwick said they would pass these plans onto the new owners although he has a soft spot for the existing house which has spectacular views of the water.

“It’s like a top seventies’ motel,” he said.

“Elvis would definitely feel at home there.”

Kona Kahlua has been fitted out with 1970s-style furniture too.

Some scenes from the 1966 movie Paradise, Hawaiian Style starring Elvis were shot on Hawaii’s Kona Coast.

The official Graceland blog states that Hawaii was Elvis’ favourite vacation spot as well as the setting for one of his most famous films, Blue Hawaii.

Mr Anderson said the Mornington Peninsula house offered views across Sullivan Bay and Cameron’s Bight towards Arthur’s Seat.

“It takes in the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron and all the marina,” Mr Warwick said.

“There’s lots of boats and lots of activity, and you’re looking right up the beach.”

The house features an open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas, five bedrooms including a self-contained studio suite, three bathrooms, a rumpus room, mudroom and laundry and two double garages.

Kona Kahlua is just 2km to both the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron and the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club.

The house is within walking distance of the Sorrento and Blairgowrie shops and restaurants, Tideways beach, Blairgowrie Marina, walking trails and parklands.

“If you’re a boating fanatic and you’re into keel boats, the bigger yachts, you can go to Blairgowrie,” Mr Warwick said.

“But if you’re keen on the smaller ones, the Couta boats, then you’ve got Sorrento around the corner as well.”

The home’s previous owner, a yachter, had stored all his boats at Kona Kahlua, Mr Warwick added.
